Peterborough community contacts, councils and local services

Find the right council, library and local information - without confusing Peterborough city services with neighbouring authorities.

Start with the right council

Peterborough City Council is a unitary authority. It combines the local responsibilities usually divided between a county and district council, including matters such as bins, council tax, planning, roads, schools and social care. For Peterborough city services, it is not the same organisation as Cambridgeshire County Council.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority is another distinct body, working at a wider level. It is not the first customer-services contact for a missed household bin. If you live near the boundary, check which authority covers your address: a Peterborough postal address alone does not settle the question.

Report a problem or ask for help

The city council's contact page brings together service-specific routes for problems such as missed collections, fly-tipping, potholes, street lighting and damaged bins. Going to the relevant form helps the report reach the right team and lets you supply the location and details it needs.

For a question that does not fit those routes, use the council's current general contact information. Check arrangements before travelling to a customer-services desk; the address of a council building does not mean every service is available there without an appointment. Keep reference numbers when following up a report.

Libraries close to home

Peterborough's library service includes branches, digital resources and mobile provision. Libraries are useful not just for borrowing books but for computers, children's activities and finding community information. Services and staffed hours differ between locations, so check your chosen branch rather than using another library's timetable.

At the time this guide was updated, the operator had announced changes to Central Library during refurbishment. Use the branch directory for the current location and access arrangements before visiting; a temporary relocation should not be treated as a permanent address.

Neighbourhoods, parishes and community spaces

Some surrounding villages have parish councils, an additional local tier for parish matters and local representation. Ward and parish boundaries are not always obvious from a neighbourhood name. Check official maps and the relevant council's information before choosing whom to contact.

For a club, class or meeting venue, start with the organisation or hall itself and confirm booking details, accessibility and availability. Our community and leisure section is another place to look as the directory grows. A listing is not an endorsement, and this directory cannot handle emergency reports or provide official council decisions.
